Department Statement

As Environmental Health & Safety Specialist this position is primarily responsible for occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and environmental protection. The incumbent is accountable for effective response in times of crises, conflict and other challenges facing the campus and for effectively avoiding and mitigating risk. Areas of focus include responsibility for:
•meeting external and University requirements and regulations for assigned areas;
•actively minimizing risks and incidents within assigned areas;
•proper documentation of current requirements within assigned areas;
•proper documentation of issues within assigned areas;
•ensuring all escalated issues within assigned area are addressed in a timely manner;
•effectiveness of advice and guidance provided to the University regarding assigned areas;
•effective adherence to all assigned permitting and code requirements;
•effectiveness of all assigned facility inspections and testing;
•ensuring that all community members within assigned areas receive sufficient training to meet their obligations;
•developing effective relationships and coordination with local, state, and federal personnel;
•developing effective relationships and coordination with staff within assigned area; and
•execution of crisis response consistent with policy and plan.

As part of this role, the incumbent is responsible for the following:
•effective supervision of all assigned personnel;
•effective management of all assigned facilities;
•effective management of all assigned technology;
•effective contribution to University policy related to assigned areas; and
as required, providing effective advice, counsel, and leadership on committees.

Name Environmental Health and Safety Expertise

Demonstrated expertise and experience in occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental protection to ensure health and safety and regulatory compliance with Federal, State and local regulations and within the context of a small, private, rural, liberal arts university. Ability to survey and apply best practices to build and execute University environmental health and safety programs and processes. Expertise sufficient to avoid and mitigate material consequences to the University.

Demonstrated expert knowledge of occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental protection regulations relevant to the University at the local, State and Federal level. Expertise sufficient to avoid and mitigate material consequences to the University.

Demonstrated ability to deliver training and outreach to faculty, staff, students on guidelines and programs to ensure regulatory compliance and minimize risks related to applicable areas of environmental protection, health and safety, and emergency management programs. Demonstrated ability to build and maintain trust and confidence of all Colgate community members for the purpose of minimizing risk and increasing compliance. Ability to maintain appropriate certifications needed to provide training.

Professional Experience/ Qualifications

- Solid aptitude for influencing and advocating for a culture that supports occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental protection.
- Capable of understanding and enforcing OSHA, EPA, DOT, NYS DOH and other critical regulations.
- Able to work collegiality with a diverse group of constituents on a daily basis.
- Capable of working independently and with little direction as well as part of a team.
- Demonstrated ability to apply solid judgment and professionalism while multitasking and managing high pressure situations.
- Demonstrated customer service skills as well as solid written and verbal communication skills.
- Demonstrated desire for accuracy and attention to detail, excellent time-management skills; and the ability to manage deadlines.
- Excellent computer skills required and strong knowledge of Microsoft Suite.
- Must possess a valid New York State driver’s license in accordance with the University motor vehicle policy required.
- Ideal applicants will have, or be willing to obtain, training and/or certifications in the following areas:

New York State Asbestos Contractor/ Supervisor and Building Inspector Certifications
Certified Ergonomics Assessment Specialist
EPA Lead RRP Certified Renovator
DOT Hazardous Materials Response
CPR/AED/First Aid

Preferred Qualifications

- Substantive experience or expertise in occupational safety, industrial hygiene and environmental protection with strong regulatory compliance knowledge at the state and federal level is preferred.


- An Associate’s degree is required.
- A Bachelor’s degree in occupational health, industrial hygiene, environmental science, or one of the physical or life sciences is preferred.

Physical Requirements

- Will be required to wear a NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Health & Safety) approved respirator and pass respirator fit test. Must wear Personal Protective Equipment as required.
- Must be able to lift and carry up to a maximum of 40 pounds.
